GET TO KNOW GREG COLLIER-PAYNE (POPS) OUR CLUB CAPTAIN

The Club Captain at Randpark Club has always played an important role at Randpark Club. The Captain is the representative of its Members and performs various roles during his term as an Office Bearer. He gives generously of himself during this period and ends up spending a lot of time at Randpark Club. He works closely with the Members, Committee and the staff at Randpark Club.

We took some time to get to know Greg Collier-Payne (Pops) a little better this week :

When did you start playing golf? I started playing golf in 1998 and joined Randpark Club shortly thereafter in 2002! At this time of my life my children were older and I had free time. I wanted to play a sport that I could enjoy with them.
Why do you play golf? It is time out! I love the outdoors and enjoy the game as I can play with my 3 sons – Grant, Wesley and Brendon. We all play together as a family on a regular basis. I enjoy the competitive and social aspect of the game whilst knowing that it is a sport that anyone can enjoy.
Why Randpark, what do you enjoy about the Club? I get a real sense of belonging at Randpark. I have built solid friendships at the Club and enjoy the fact that my family is welcome at any time.
Tell us something we don’t know about yourself? I used to be a provincial lawn bowler. I attended the World Champs in 1993 and 1997 whilst coaching blind bowlers. The bowlers that I coached received 2 gold’s in Canada and 1 gold and a silver medal in New Zealand! To share in the success of my students was probably the proudest moments of my life.
Your best moment on the Golf Course? My best moment was at Randpark – of course! In 2004 I had my first hole-in-one on the 2nd hole on the old Firethorn Golf Course. A glorious moment and one that I will treasure forever.
Your worst moment in Golf? I am an ex Stock Broker and I hate losing money! Every now and again I lose money on the golf course. However knowing how to play the “betting” game this does not happen often. Members, be warned … Pops was a very good Stock Broker … bet against Pops and you will lose money.

Ex-Club President Koos Loots (79) shoots his age

Most would agree that holes 10-18 on Firethorn is the harder of the course’s two nines but sweet-swinging 79-year-old Koos Loots had no trouble touring the tough inward loop in just 37 strokes in the club’s Senior Competition on Tuesday morning …
