Club Championships 2017

by | May 8, 2017

A fantastic weekend filled with loads of excitement and drama. Our defending champion Johan Aucamp could not find his way around those slick Bushwillow greens. With the tricky flag positions, one had to be on top of your iron play. Unfortunately not the fortune for Johan who found himself seven strokes behind Erwee Botha, Jacobus Oosthuizen and Quentin Ferreira, who finished on one under par (-1) through the first round.

His misfortune continued as he started his 2nd round with a double bogey on the first hole, which just increased the gap and practically placed him out of contention.

The leaders however, were all very excited to start their 2nd round and aimed to strike that opening tee-shot down the fairway. Judging by the conversations it was very evident, still anyone’s championship.

Early into the 2nd round, a couple of birdies from the front runners saw a promising finish, but the 7th on Firethorn took its toll and caused some major upsets. Only one person, Gary Baynham (2009 winner), managed to execute on his game plan by completing the first nine in only 31 strokes (-5). This set him up for his 2nd Championship title.
He held onto his lead by finishing his 2nd round with a score of 67, and a total of 141 (-3). Hi closest rival, Ruan Botha, had to achieve a birdie on the 18th hole to force a play-off. This was not to be as he played a way-ward tee-shot, forcing him to play a very risky stroke to the green. Ruan was a little unlucky as he caught a branch of a tree with his 2nd shot and could only attempt to hit the green with his 3rd from 150m out.

A well-deserved victory for a past champion, Gary Baynham. Congratulations Gary!
