Firethorn looking hot says birdie queen Lejan

by | Oct 28, 2021

Lejan Lewthwaite, winner of the Standard Bank Pro-Am Invitational at Firethorn on Tuesday, has given the course the thumbs up ahead of the upcoming men’s Joburg Open to be held at the club from November 25-28.

“Condition-wise the course looked really great and even though the greens had sand on them (part of the course grooming ahead of the Joburg Open) they were still running very true,” said the 30-year-old who finished on top of the leaderboard on five-under-par 67 alongside Cassandra Hall. Then Lejan, in spectacular fashion, holed her bunker shot for birdie at Firethorn’s par-four 18th, which is stroke 1 for the ladies, to snatch a dramatic playoff win.

Lewthwaite, who plays out of Serengeti, is a four-time winner on the Sunshine Ladies Tour, with victory in the 2019 South African Women’s Masters the highlight of her career. Her 67 on Tuesday was bogey-free and included five birdies.

“It’s good to be back home and playing good golf again after not such a good year for me on tour overseas,” says Lejan. “What Standard Bank did for women’s golf in this eight-event series is huge.”

Tuesday’s tournament was the final Order of  Merit event in the Standard Pro-Am Invitational Series. In the penultimate event – also at Firethorn, on Monday – Ivanna Samu and Nobuhle Dlamini shared top honours on 72 as there was no play-off. That was Dlamini’s second win in the series and the fourth by the in-form Samu.

Kelsey Nicholas had the good luck at Randpark when she aced Firethorn’s par-3 fifth hole to bag R50 000.

The Joburg Open has a purse of R17,5-million and is co-sanctioned with the European Tour.
