Randpark’s Ryan red hot at Blue Valley

by | May 14, 2022

Randpark’s Ryan Tipping blitzed Blue Valley with a final round of seven-under-par 65, which equalled the day’s best return, to finish tied third on nine-under 207 in the Altron Big Easy Tour event held there this past week.

The 41-year-old former South African No.1 amateur looks to be on the comeback trail after a somewhat lean period in the pro ranks. He turned professional in 2004 and, over the years, has had a string of top 10s on the Sunshine Tour – the highlight being victory in the 2009 SAA Pro-Am Invitational right here at Randpark. “But then for a while,” he says, “I found I wasn’t in love with the game which is why I went through that lean period.” Now he’s in a far better space golf-wise, and doting on his little son Tye who turns three in a month’s time. “So there isn’t that much time for golf than I once had, but to compensate I’m working smarter on the game than ever before.”

At Blue Valley, Ryan started his final round in grand style with four straight birdies. “And it could have been six in a row because I missed fairly short birdie putts at the fifth and sixth holes. I dropped at No 8 and then finished off the day really well with four birdies in the last six holes. All in all, pretty satisfying and my ball-striking was really good.”

Ryan’s good golf on the Altron Big Easy Tour follows on from some fine performances on that tour last year, when he was in the top five three times – highlights being a pair of eight-under-par 54-hole returns in November. Now the popular Randpark man can look ahead, with renewed confidence in his ability, to June when four Big Easy events will be staged in Gauteng.

Young Christiaan Maas took top honours at Blue Valley on 13-under-par 203, with Bradley Diggeden finishing second on 206, just one shot better than Ryan.
