Whiz kid Danielle shoots 89 aged just nine to seal C-Division honours

by | May 26, 2022

Star of the show in the women’s C-Division in our Club Championships was undoubtedly nine-year-old Danielle Chong who took top honours. On Firethorn, playing off a 30 handicap, she had 32 Stableford points. But on day two on Bushwillow, playing off 28, she shot the lights out with an amazing 47 points. That translated to an 89 gross – a stunning performance for a girl so young.

Here is a comment from Randpark’s own Lesley Rule, who serves on the Central Gauteng Golf Union executive: “I know very few people know about our little C Division winner. Let me tell you about her. I met her on the tee box on Saturday, she was playing with Carol, Margaret and myself. She has the most stunning golf swing and goes to Darren Witter’s Academy. She was out driving us all day, so steady and no fear. It was just such a pleasure to see this delightful little girl play this game with such ease and grace. I won’t be at all surprised if she becomes a future Club Champion, represents Gauteng at a provincial level once she is 12, and becomes a scratch golfer. So remember her name, Danielle Chong, she is going places.”

Asked about her golf, Danielle said: “My mom and dad first took me to the driving range when I was three. That’s when it all started. I really do love the game. My irons are the best part of my game. Darren is so good because he makes us get the work done.” (and that, of course, also applies to Stuart and Jose). “One day I would like to become a pro golfer.”

This whiz kid said she felt the courses were in “really nice condition”. Very gracious of you, Danielle!

Danielle’s mum Cuantia says her daughter goes to the Academy three times a week and Powerblast training with Theo Heinrich also three times a week, which has proved very beneficial. When not playing golf, Danielle attends Avalon Private School and enjoys playing soccer and tennis.
