Shining the Golf Blues Away

by | Mar 22, 2021

FOR centuries now golf and social golfers have been having a well-documented strange relationship. What one can call a love-hate relationship.

Social golfers love the game, but we believe what we get out of it is nothing but hate. The game steals our balls in the bushes and drowns them in water. The greens are often slippery, which makes our putts many.

Golf on the other hand thinks that social golfers don’t show it the warranted affection. We miss generously huge fairways at a canter and find undiscovered territories on the course. Some of us occasionally miscount our scores and others use their clubs as excavators to dig through fairways.

But the loyal people that we social golfers are keep coming back, not because we are suckers for punishment, but because we find solace in the social when the golf is elusive.

This is why social golfers love the 19th hole. Here we are all equal and competent. Here, our money can buy presence and status. Others even love their changerooms for banter and mostly gossip about those that floundered most. I love the views most. I love most 19th holes where the clubhouse faces west.

But this week, I discovered another beaut: the sunrise. After teeing off at 6.15am @randparkgolfclub Bushwillow, just before leaving the 11th green, there it was, starring at me, decorating the skies, colouring the fairways and thawing the dews on the greens before the lawnmowers came.

What a sight. Sunrise golf comes highly recommended.

When it gets hard to keep your eyes on the ball, look up the skies for relief.
